Developer: Brøderbund Software This game has unused text. |
They say that the past is a foreign country.
Turns out it's just the U.S., though.
This dialog suggests some sort of demonstration mode (aimed at educators?), but there's no sign of how to invoke it.
Two menus were used to test animations...
...and the third handled everything else.

The third version of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? was released on the heels of the end of the hit PBS Kids game show in 1996. This game included hundreds of QuickTime videos of Lynne Thigpen playing The Chief. This was the last version of the game to follow the 'classic' formula of the series, but much of the game, especially the 'warrant' portion, was heavily redesigned. Version 3.5, released in 1998, added speech welcoming the player to each country, a talking translator, and an 'ACME Global Language Link-Up' satellite that quizzed the user on the local language. (Wikipedia)
After The Learning Company's purchase of Brøderbund, the game was re-released (version 3.5.3) under the new 'The Worlds of Carmen Sandiego' banner, with an improved launcher/installer, and with the Learning Company logo replacing that of Brøderbund in the intro video.
A Spanish translation, titled ¿Dónde en el mundo estará Carmen Sandiego?, was also released. Despite being labeled as version 3.5 and bearing the same 'El mundo de Carmen Sandiego' branding as the English-language re-release, it did not include the Global Language Link-Up, though did include the other additions.
Version 4.0, released exclusively to the school market in 2004, was billed as including ten more countries than 3.5, as well as updated geographic information. However, it actually includes the same 50 countries; it also omits the opening animation and has slightly worse graphics where text is included. On the other hand, it does run on PowerPC OSX, and up to Windows 7.
Despite their different version numbers, all of the versions on this page are essentially the same game, with only the minor differences noted above.
This is the final edition of the original branch of the game. Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Treasures of Knowledge is an entirely different game.
